MVLA Ethnic Studies Curriculum Framework.pdf
Summary: The State of California requires two board reviews of the Ethnic Studies Framework. This is the second review of the framework. The MVLA Ethnic Studies course conducted its initial reading during two extensive Board Study Sessions held on April 3rd and May 22nd. Upon thorough analysis of the Ethnic Studies framework and lessons within units 1-7, we reflected on the five sections of Ethnic Studies run during the 22-23 academic year, considering the lessons we developed and relevant data. As part of the inclusive approach to develop the Ethnic Studies course, we carried out various community outreach programs in the last two years, such as Ethnic Studies Brown Bag Community Webinar, outreach to Clubs, parent groups, and Board Presentations, as well as Thought Exchange.
Funding: The state support of AB101 and Ethnic Studies allocated MVLA with $116,046. We have utilized approximately $113,000 in the past two years, with $88,000 of that amount going towards the employment of a 0.2 FTE Teacher On Special Assignment as the lead for Ethnic Studies during that time. We have also allotted an estimated $25,000 towards teacher collaboration time and professional development.
Recommendation: Approve the MVLA Ethnic Studies Course.
