Subject: 15.3 Expansion of the Middle College Program
LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan) Goal:
Enclosure
File Attachment:
Summary: In 1993, Middle College was created in partnership with Foothill Community College and Palo Alto Union High School District to provide students an opportunity to gain college level course credits in a small environment away from the traditional comprehensive high school campus. Currently, the program serves 65 students in grades 11 and 12, and currently has 3 staff members.

The Middle College has been successful in many ways.  30-35 students graduate and 90% go on to post-secondary education.  Last year there were nearly 60 students on the wait list. Due to the success of the students, the strong staff, and the unique model, demand has continued to increase.

Staff is recommending an expansion of Middle College.  The expansion model would increase staff by 2 FTE.  This would increase the available spots for students in the program to 50-60 for MVLA and 50-60 for PAUSD. We have communicated with Foothill College, Krause Center Staff, and students currently in the Middle College program and have received support for the expansion.  Due to the current waiting list, this expansion will provide highly desired classroom spots and more options for students.  We also plan to continue to explore further options for all of our students as these newly available spots will not address fully the high demand.

We would add 2 more teachers, and increase the clerical position to full time plus possible step and column and salary adjustments. (Edited to add sentence 1/13/20.)
